Post miscarriage symptoms: what to know

Short answer
After miscarriage, bleeding and cramping may occur, while symptoms that become severe, persist or include fever need medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common changes
- Bleeding, cramping, tiredness and emotional distress may occur.
- Monitor
- Notice whether pain and bleeding are easing or worsening.
- Urgent signs
- Fever, fainting, severe pain or very heavy bleeding require prompt care.
Symptoms after pregnancy loss
Bleeding may resemble a heavy period at first and can lessen over time. Cramping happens as the uterus contracts, and tiredness, breast tenderness or nausea may take time to settle. Emotional symptoms such as sadness, shock, irritability or anxiety are also common responses to loss.
Symptoms alone cannot confirm whether the miscarriage is complete. A clinician may use an examination, pregnancy testing or Transvaginal Ultrasound to check the uterus and guide follow-up.
How to care for yourself
Rest when you need to, drink fluids and use pain relief only as advised for you. Track bleeding, pain, temperature and any unusual discharge so you can describe changes accurately. Use sanitary pads while bleeding if your clinician recommends them, and follow the advice you were given about sex, tampons and exercise.
If tissue remains or symptoms do not settle, your clinician may explain Medical Management of Miscarriage or Surgical Management of Miscarriage. Emotional support from a trusted person or counsellor can be as valuable as physical follow-up.
When to seek care
Get urgent medical help for very heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pain, fainting, dizziness, fever, chills, foul-smelling discharge or feeling seriously unwell. Seek assessment if bleeding or pain is worsening rather than easing. Emergency care is also appropriate if you feel unsafe because of overwhelming distress or thoughts of self-harm.
Questions for your doctor
How do I know whether the miscarriage is complete? Which symptoms should improve first? When should I have follow-up testing or an ultrasound? What pain relief is suitable for me? When can I return to usual activity, sex or trying for pregnancy?

Questions people ask
How long do post miscarriage symptoms last?
The pattern varies. Bleeding and cramping should be discussed if they are worsening, severe or not settling as expected.
Can symptoms show that tissue remains?
Symptoms cannot confirm this on their own. Examination, testing or ultrasound may be needed.
