Swelling after a C-section

After a Caesarean Section, pregnancy hormones, intravenous fluids and time spent resting can make the hands, legs, feet or ankles look puffy. Swelling on both sides is often more consistent with these whole-body changes and should gradually improve as recovery progresses.

The pattern matters. One-sided swelling, redness, warmth or tenderness can be a sign of a clot. Widespread sudden swelling with a severe headache, visual symptoms or pain under the ribs may indicate Pre-eclampsia after birth. Incision swelling with spreading redness, pus or fever needs assessment for infection.

Take short gentle walks as advised, move your ankles while resting, and elevate swollen limbs when comfortable. Drink normally and choose loose clothing and shoes. Follow your discharge instructions for wound care and prescribed medicines. Postnatal Physiotherapy may help with safe mobility and abdominal recovery; do not push through increasing pain.

Call your maternity team promptly for swelling that is rapidly worsening, a painful or one-sided leg, fever, an increasingly red or draining incision, severe headache, visual change or upper-abdominal pain. Call emergency services for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, fainting, seizure or collapse. These symptoms need urgent evaluation rather than home observation.

Ask whether the location and timing of your swelling fit normal recovery, how to monitor your incision and blood pressure, and when to resume walking or exercises. Ask which symptoms mean you should return to hospital and whether you need a postnatal review sooner than planned.
