What should you know about portable musculoskeletal ultrasound?

A clinician moves a small probe over gelled skin to create live images. The scan can compare sides, observe a tendon during movement, and assess fluid-filled areas or changes close to the skin. It does not use ionising radiation, but it cannot show every structure equally well; bone blocks the view of tissues behind it, and some deep or complex problems may need another test.

Portable equipment can support point-of-care assessment in a consultation and may help guide a procedure. The image is interpreted alongside your history, examination, and symptoms rather than treated as a stand-alone answer.

Wear clothing that allows access to the painful or restricted area. Tell the clinician where symptoms start, which movements change them, and whether the skin is tender or broken. The scan is generally performed on the skin, so you may be asked to move the joint or contract a muscle while images are taken.

If ultrasound is being used to guide a treatment, ask what the procedure involves and how to care for the area afterward. A scan itself does not treat a tendon or joint problem; your rehabilitation or treatment plan follows from the complete assessment.

Seek urgent assessment for a newly deformed limb, inability to use an arm or leg after an injury, rapidly increasing swelling, a cold or pale extremity, or new severe weakness or numbness. After a guided procedure, contact your clinician for worsening redness, drainage, fever, or pain that is escalating rather than settling.
