What IPL is doing

IPL means intense pulsed light. Unlike a single-wavelength laser, it emits a broad band of light. The light is absorbed more strongly by some hair pigments than by surrounding skin, creating heat around the follicle. Hair reduction develops over repeated treatments because follicles respond differently according to their growth phase.

Home units are usually less powerful than professional systems and may include a skin-tone sensor or a smaller treatment window. IPL is not the same as shaving, waxing, or an Alexandrite, Diode, or Nd:YAG laser. Darker skin, very light or grey hair, recently tanned skin, and certain medicines can change the risk and expected response.

Preparing for treatment

Read the manual, perform any recommended patch test, and use the lowest effective setting that feels tolerable. Shave rather than wax or pluck before treatment if the instructions advise it, keep the area clean and dry, and protect tattoos, dark moles, and heavily pigmented spots as directed. Avoid treating sunburned or recently tanned skin.

Do not use IPL over active infection, inflamed bumps, or unexplained lesions. If facial hair growth is sudden or coarse, discuss possible hirsutism or another hormonal cause with a clinician before relying on home treatment. Ingrown hairs and razor bumps may need a different plan.

Skin changes that need attention

Stop using the device and seek medical advice for blistering, severe pain, marked swelling, spreading redness, pus, or a new dark or light patch that does not settle. Urgent help is appropriate for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or widespread hives after treatment. Recurrent painful lumps, draining tunnels, or scarring in the armpits or groin warrant assessment for hidradenitis suppurativa rather than repeated light treatment.
