The device detects electrical signals through sensors placed on the skin, often on the chest, arms, or fingers. Its tracing may help a clinician assess heart rhythm and the timing of each heartbeat. A short recording can miss an episode that starts and stops at another time, so a normal result does not explain every episode of palpitations, dizziness, or fainting.

Some portable devices send a recording to an app or clinic. The display may label a rhythm, but an automated label is not a diagnosis. Movement, loose contact, dry skin, or electrical interference can make the tracing difficult to read.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the plan given by your clinician. Sit still, relax your arms, and keep the sensors in the recommended position while recording. Note the time, what you were doing, and symptoms such as a racing, irregular, or skipped heartbeat. Keep the original recording available rather than relying on a screenshot or app summary.

Do not use a portable ECG to postpone an examination or change prescribed medicine. Bring the device information and recordings to your appointment so the clinician can check how the device was used.

Seek emergency help for chest pressure or pain, severe breathlessness, collapse, new confusion, or fainting with ongoing symptoms. A fast or irregular heartbeat with weakness, sweating, or feeling seriously unwell also needs urgent assessment. Do not wait for a portable recording to decide whether these symptoms are serious.
