What should you know about a portable DEXA scan?

A portable DEXA scan measures bone mineral density with a mobile scanner brought to the person being assessed. DEXA, also written DXA, uses low-dose X-rays to compare the density of selected bones with reference values. It is commonly used at the hip and spine, although the exact areas depend on the equipment and clinical question.

The report may describe bone density and whether the pattern is consistent with reduced bone strength. It helps a clinician estimate fracture risk alongside age, previous fractures, medicines, menopause history and other health factors. A scan does not show every reason for bone pain and does not predict exactly whether an individual will fracture.

Wear clothing without metal around the area being scanned and tell the team about recent contrast imaging, metal implants or the possibility of pregnancy. You usually remain still on a scanning table while the arm of the DEXA Scanner passes over the body. Follow any instructions about calcium supplements or medicines, and bring earlier reports so changes can be compared.

A DEXA scan itself is not an emergency service. Seek urgent care after a fall if you have severe pain, a visible deformity, inability to stand or walk, or new numbness or weakness. If the scan was arranged because of repeated fractures, long-term steroid treatment or early loss of ovarian function, arrange follow-up to discuss the result rather than waiting without a plan.

Ask which bones will be scanned, how your result compares with an earlier Bone Density Scan, and what your fracture-risk assessment means. Ask whether nutrition, exercise, fall prevention or medicine is appropriate, and whether Premature Ovarian Insufficiency affects the plan.
