A portable DEXA scan machine is mobile equipment that creates bone-density images without requiring travel to a fixed scanning unit. It uses two X-ray energy levels to assess how much radiation passes through selected bones. A trained operator positions the detector and scanner, while you lie still so the measurements are not affected by movement.

The equipment can provide measurements for sites such as the hip or lower spine, depending on its design and the service providing the scan. A clinician combines the reading with your history, fracture history, medicines and other risk factors. Portable equipment may be convenient, but the report still needs qualified interpretation and comparison with suitable previous scans.

Tell the operator about pregnancy, recent contrast studies, metal near the scanning area and difficulty lying flat. Choose clothing without metal and follow instructions about supplements or medicines. During the appointment, keep still and answer positioning questions clearly. Afterward, ask how and when the report will be shared and who will explain any recommended next steps.

The machine is used for planned assessment, not to manage sudden severe pain. Seek urgent medical care after an injury if you cannot bear weight, have marked swelling or deformity, or develop new weakness or numbness. If a result suggests reduced bone density, book the recommended review so fracture prevention can be considered.
