Short answer

Polymethyl methacrylate bone cement is a surgical material used to secure selected implants or support weakened bone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Material
Polymethyl methacrylate, often called PMMA
Role
Fixation or support in selected procedures
Choice
Depends on bone, implant, and procedure

How the material is used

The material starts as separate components that are mixed during the procedure. It then becomes workable before hardening in the intended space. In joint replacement, it may fill the gap between an implant and prepared bone. In some spine procedures, it is placed into a damaged vertebral body to help stabilise it.

Bone cement is not the same as ordinary household cement, and it does not make a joint indestructible. The surgeon chooses whether a cemented, uncemented, or combined fixation method fits the bone quality, implant design, body region, and overall treatment plan.

What to discuss before surgery

Ask your surgeon why cement fixation is being considered, what alternative fixation methods exist, and how the choice affects movement, rehabilitation, and follow-up. Discuss allergies, previous operations, medicines, dental problems, and any heart or lung conditions before the procedure.

After surgery, follow weight-bearing and wound-care instructions closely. Exercises should progress according to the treating team’s plan. Total Hip Replacement and Total Knee Replacement are examples of operations where fixation choices may be discussed; Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty use cement in a different spinal setting.

When to contact the surgical team

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, new numbness or weakness, calf swelling, or shortness of breath. Sudden chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, or fainting needs emergency care.

Useful questions for your surgeon

Ask where the cement will be placed, how it will be delivered, what fixation is expected to achieve, and which symptoms should prompt an urgent call. Clarify the planned rehabilitation milestones and how the implant or treated bone will be checked afterward.

Questions people ask

Is bone cement an implant?

Bone cement is a material used around or within bone; it is not the joint replacement implant itself. Its role depends on the operation.

Is bone cement used only for joints?

No. It can also be used in selected spinal procedures to help stabilise a weakened vertebral body.
