Recommended age for a pneumonia vaccine

The risk from serious pneumonia changes across life. Older adults may be offered vaccination because immune protection can weaken with age. Younger adults and children may also qualify when they have chronic heart or lung disease, diabetes, absent or impaired spleen function, or reduced immunity. The exact recommendation differs between health systems, so an online age rule cannot replace an individual review. Pneumonia is a lung infection, and a vaccine targets selected germs rather than every possible cause.

Ask a clinic or pharmacist to check your age, medical history, pregnancy status when relevant, allergies, and vaccination record. Mention asthma or other lung disease, kidney disease, smoking, immune-suppressing treatment, and any operation affecting the spleen. Keep a record of the product and date after vaccination. Seasonal influenza and COVID-19 prevention may also reduce the chance of respiratory illness, but those vaccines are separate from pneumonia vaccination.
