Pneumonia vaccine for older adults

Pneumonia has several causes. Pneumococcal vaccines target selected bacteria that can cause pneumonia and invasive infection; they do not prevent every lung infection, including all cases linked with Influenza or COVID-19. Protection and eligibility depend on age, previous doses, immune conditions, long-term illnesses, and local recommendations. A vaccine cannot treat pneumonia that is already present. Older people may have less obvious symptoms, so a new cough, Fever, confusion, or reduced activity deserves attention.

Ask a clinician or pharmacist to review your vaccination record and medical history. Tell them about previous vaccine reactions, immune-suppressing treatment, allergies, and current illness. They can explain which vaccine is appropriate, whether another dose is needed, and how it fits with other recommended vaccines. After vaccination, a sore arm or mild tiredness can occur. Rest, drink fluids, and seek advice if symptoms are concerning or do not settle.

Vaccination is preventive, not a reason to delay care. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, fainting, new confusion, or chest pain. During or after an illness, worsening Cough, persistent Fever, shaking Chills, or inability to drink needs prompt medical review. Rapid deterioration with extreme weakness or confusion may indicate Sepsis.
