Pneumonia and rib pain

Pain from the lung lining is often sharp and worse when breathing in, coughing, or changing position. Repeated coughing can also strain the muscles between the ribs, making the area tender to touch or movement. Rib pain does not by itself show how severe the infection is. Other chest problems, including heart conditions, can feel similar, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.

Use prescribed pneumonia treatment as directed and rest while keeping the upper body supported. Hold a pillow gently against the chest when coughing if that feels helpful, but do not tightly bind the ribs because shallow breathing can allow mucus to collect. Ask a clinician or pharmacist which pain medicine is suitable for you, particularly with kidney, stomach, liver, or blood-thinning medicines. Keep taking slow, comfortable breaths rather than avoiding breathing altogether.

Get prompt medical advice if pain is new, worsening, persistent after other symptoms improve, or accompanied by fever returning or increasing breathlessness. Call emergency services for severe chest pressure, sudden major breathing difficulty, fainting, blue or grey lips, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back. Coughing up more than a small streak of blood also needs urgent assessment.
