Pneumonia in dogs treatment: what to know

Pneumonia is inflammation and infection in the lungs that can interfere with oxygen exchange. Dogs may cough, breathe faster, seem tired, lose interest in food, or develop fever. Some dogs show only reduced energy, so a quiet change in behaviour deserves attention. A veterinarian may listen to the chest and recommend imaging or tests to distinguish infection from other lung problems. Bacteria, viruses, inhaled material, and other triggers can require different approaches; antibiotics are not suitable for every cause.

Treatment may include prescribed antimicrobials when a bacterial infection is suspected, oxygen support when breathing is difficult, fluids when dehydration is present, and medication chosen for the specific cause. Keep your dog calm, warm, and away from smoke or dust. Offer small amounts of water and food only if breathing is comfortable, and give medicines exactly as directed. Do not use human cough or pain medicines unless the veterinarian specifically approves them. Follow-up checks help confirm that breathing, appetite, and energy are improving.

Seek urgent care if your dog is struggling to breathe, breathing with an open mouth at rest, has blue or very pale gums, collapses, cannot keep water down, or becomes unusually unresponsive. Rapid worsening, marked weakness, or signs of dehydration also need prompt veterinary attention. A persistent cough with fever should be assessed rather than watched at home.

Ask what cause is suspected, whether chest imaging or testing is needed, how each medicine should be given, what breathing pattern is concerning, and when a recheck should happen. Clarify whether exercise, isolation from other animals, or changes to feeding are needed during recovery.
