Pneumonia in cats: home treatment

Pneumonia can result from infection, inhaled material, or another underlying problem. Cats may hide illness, and breathing changes can become serious before the cause is clear. A veterinarian may assess breathing, listen to the chest, and recommend imaging or other tests. Treatment can involve prescribed medicines, oxygen, fluids, or hospital monitoring. Never give a cat human painkillers, leftover antibiotics, or essential oils unless a veterinarian specifically directs you.

Keep the cat indoors in a quiet, warm, well-ventilated room and minimise handling. Offer fresh water and small, palatable meals; do not force food or liquid into the mouth. Give prescribed medicines on schedule and record appetite, drinking, breathing effort, and alertness. Separate the cat from other animals if advised, clean shared bowls, and arrange follow-up even if symptoms appear to improve.

Go to an emergency veterinarian for open-mouth breathing, blue or grey gums, severe effort with each breath, collapse, extreme weakness, or inability to remain alert. Immediate care is also needed if the cat stops drinking, repeatedly vomits, or cannot keep prescribed medicine down. Transport gently in a carrier and avoid pressure on the chest.
