What does a pneumonia cough feel like?

Inflammation and fluid in the air sacs can make coughing frequent or painful. Some people cough without producing mucus, while others notice thick or coloured phlegm. Viral and bacterial infections can look similar at first, so the sound or colour of a cough cannot identify the cause by itself. Cough can also remain for a while as the airways recover after the infection has improved.

Rest, drink fluids if you can, and avoid smoke or vaping while your lungs recover. Warm drinks may soothe an irritated throat. Take prescribed medicines exactly as directed; do not start leftover antibiotics because they may be unsuitable. Note whether breathing, fever, chest pain and energy are improving, and tell a clinician if the cough is worsening or preventing sleep and hydration.

Seek prompt medical advice for a cough with breathlessness, fever, chills, chest pain or new confusion. Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, coughing blood, fainting or unusual drowsiness. A cough that briefly improves and then becomes worse also deserves review, particularly in older adults or people with long-term heart or lung conditions.
