Pneumonia and pregnancy: what to know

How the structures involved in Pneumonia differ from normal

Short answer

Pneumonia during pregnancy needs prompt medical assessment because breathing illness can progress and treatment choices must suit both parent and baby.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Pneumonia in pregnancy

Pregnancy changes breathing, circulation, and immune responses. A lung infection can therefore cause more breathlessness or exhaustion than expected and may reduce oxygen available to the body. Fever, chills, cough, chest discomfort, and coughing up phlegm are possible signs. Influenza and COVID-19 can resemble pneumonia, so a clinician may assess your chest, breathing, oxygen level, and pregnancy details before choosing treatment.

What to do

Call your maternity team, GP, or urgent-care service promptly if you have a new cough with fever, worsening breathlessness, or feel significantly unwell. Mention how far along the pregnancy is, your medicines, allergies, and any reduced fetal movement if that applies. Rest, drink fluids if permitted, avoid smoke, and use only medicines approved for you by a clinician or pharmacist. Do not delay care because you are unsure whether symptoms are pregnancy-related.

When to seek emergency help

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, inability to keep fluids down, or rapidly worsening weakness. Contact maternity services urgently for reduced fetal movement or other pregnancy concerns. A severe infection can spread beyond the lungs and may lead to sepsis.

Questions for your care team

Ask which examinations are needed, which medicines are suitable in pregnancy, how to manage fever and fluids, how the baby will be monitored if necessary, and which changes require immediate return.

Questions people ask

Can pneumonia be treated during pregnancy?

Clinicians can select an assessment and treatment approach that takes pregnancy into account. Do not self-treat with leftover medicines.

Should fever in pregnancy be ignored if the cough is mild?

No. Fever with respiratory symptoms should be reported promptly so infection and breathing can be assessed.
