What to know about the pneumonia 15 vaccine

Pneumococcal bacteria can cause infections such as pneumonia, bloodstream infection, and meningitis. A vaccine covering fifteen types helps prepare immune defences against the types included in its formulation; it cannot prevent every cause of pneumonia. Protection also depends on age, previous vaccination, immune health, and local recommendations. The vaccine is not a treatment for pneumonia that has already started.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist whether this vaccine is suitable for you and whether previous pneumococcal doses change the plan. Mention allergies, pregnancy, immune-system problems, and any past reaction to vaccination. Keep the appointment record. A sore arm, tiredness, or mild fever may occur afterwards.
