What should you know about plastic surgery cyst removal?

A skin cyst is a sac beneath or within the skin that may contain fluid, keratin, or other material. A surgeon examines its size, depth, location, inflammation, and relation to nearby structures. Local anaesthetic is often used for a small accessible cyst, while the plan depends on the site and complexity.

Removing the capsule can reduce the chance that the same cyst reforms, but an inflamed or infected cyst may need a staged approach. The wound may be closed with stitches, left to drain, or managed with a dressing. A scar is part of the trade-off and can change in colour and texture as it matures.

Do not squeeze or puncture the lump. Tell the surgeon about allergies, bleeding problems, diabetes, immune conditions, previous raised scars, and all medicines or supplements. Urgent assessment is needed for heavy bleeding, severe swelling, fainting, or breathing difficulty. A lump that rapidly changes, becomes fixed, or repeatedly returns should be re-examined.
