Pitted keratolysis before and after: what to expect

How the structures involved in Pitted Keratolysis differ from normal

Short answer

Pitted keratolysis often improves when moisture, bacteria, and friction are addressed together, but the pits and odour may take time to settle.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What before and after can look like

Before treatment, the soles may have clusters of shallow pits, softened white skin, dampness, and a strong smell. The changes are often clearest on pressure areas such as the ball of the foot and heel. Some people have little discomfort, while others notice tenderness or a burning feeling after prolonged sweating.

After effective care, feet should become drier and the odour should lessen. The surface may look smoother as the small pits become less noticeable. Recurrence can happen if sweaty footwear, occlusion, or friction returns, so improvement is not a reason to stop foot-care habits suddenly.

How to support improvement

Wash the feet gently, dry carefully between the toes, rotate shoes, and change damp socks promptly. Choose breathable footwear when practical and avoid sharing towels, socks, or shoes. A clinician may recommend a topical antibacterial treatment and a plan to reduce sweating; follow the product directions and do not apply prescription medicine to broken skin unless instructed.

Photographs can help you compare changes in the same lighting, but appearance alone cannot confirm that the infection has cleared. Read more about [Body Odour](/symptoms/body-odour/) and [Topical Antibiotic Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-antibiotic-therapy/).

When to seek care

Arrange a medical assessment if the pits spread, pain becomes marked, the skin cracks, or there is swelling, warmth, drainage, or fever. Seek advice if symptoms do not improve with the recommended treatment or return repeatedly. A clinician can check for another foot condition and adjust treatment safely.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be pitted keratolysis or another cause of pitted skin? Which treatment should I use, for how long, and what should I do if the skin becomes irritated? How can I control foot sweating and reduce recurrence?

Questions people ask

Do the pits disappear immediately?

No. Odour and moisture may improve first, while the surface pits take longer to become less visible.

Can pitted keratolysis come back?

Yes. Persistent sweating and enclosed footwear can allow it to recur, so prevention remains useful after improvement.
