Redness, gritty discomfort, watering, itching, and eye discharge are common features of conjunctivitis itself. A prescribed drop can briefly sting, but persistent worsening irritation, swelling around the eye, or a new rash may signal a reaction and should be discussed with a clinician. Light sensitivity, pain, or reduced vision is less typical of simple conjunctivitis and deserves careful assessment rather than self-treatment.

Keep hands clean and avoid rubbing the eye. Remove contact lenses and do not restart them until advised. Follow the label and prescription instructions; never use another person’s drops or continue an old bottle. If symptoms clearly worsen after a dose, pause and seek advice about that medicine. A GP consultation can distinguish an expected brief sting from a problem needing a different plan. Do not place household solutions in the eye.

Seek urgent care for severe eye pain, sudden vision change, intense light sensitivity, an eye injury, or marked swelling. Contact a clinician promptly if a new medicine causes breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread rash, or rapidly worsening eye symptoms. Contact-lens wearers with a red or painful eye should be assessed promptly because the cornea can be affected.
