Pimples around the lips: what to know

A spot on the skin beside the mouth can behave like ordinary acne, especially when blackheads or pimples also occur elsewhere. Small similar bumps with dryness, burning or scaling around the mouth may fit perioral dermatitis. Shaving can inflame follicles, while saliva, lip products, toothpaste residue, masks and frequent rubbing can irritate the area. Blisters that tingle or form a grouped pattern are not typical acne and need a different assessment. The exact site, texture and timing are more useful than the word pimple alone.

Cleanse gently, pat dry after eating, and stop newly introduced lip or facial products if they sting. Avoid picking, scrubbing and applying steroid cream around the mouth unless prescribed for that purpose. Keep razors clean and avoid shaving directly over active bumps. Use a plain moisturiser on dry surrounding skin, keeping it off the lip opening if it causes irritation. Seek prompt help for rapidly increasing swelling of the lips or face, trouble breathing or swallowing, fever, severe pain, or redness spreading from a tender lump.
