Pills for low blood pressure: what to know

Low blood pressure may be harmless for one person but troublesome when it causes light-headedness, blurred vision, weakness or fainting. Treatment depends on the reason: a medicine may adjust blood-vessel tone or help the body retain fluid, while another medicine may need review if it is lowering your pressure. The goal is to improve symptoms without pushing blood pressure too high.

Take the prescribed dose at the stated times and do not alter it after a single reading. Rise slowly from bed or a chair, drink fluids as advised, and record when symptoms occur, what you were doing and any home readings. Do not add salt, stop another medicine or use someone else’s tablets without clinical advice. A GP consultation can help identify an underlying cause and review the full medicine list.

Seek urgent help for fainting with injury, chest pain, severe breathlessness, confusion, cold clammy skin or signs of shock. Arrange prompt assessment if dizziness keeps returning, you cannot keep fluids down, or symptoms begin after starting or changing a medicine. Sudden severe symptoms need emergency care rather than an extra tablet.
