What should you know about pico laser technology?

The device sends energy in pulses measured in picoseconds, a very short interval. Depending on the wavelength and settings, the energy can create a photoacoustic effect that fragments pigment into smaller particles, while limiting heat delivered to nearby tissue. A clinician selects settings according to the pigment depth, skin tone, treatment area and goal. It may be considered for melasma, sun spots, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, dark patches or uneven skin tone, but the same mark can have different causes.

Have the area assessed before treatment, especially if pigmentation is new, changing or irritated. Tell the clinician about recent tanning, active skin disease, medicines, a history of pigment changes after procedures and any tendency to cold sores. Afterward, follow the practice's cleansing and moisturising instructions, avoid picking or rubbing, and protect the area from sunlight with shade, clothing and sunscreen. Temporary redness, warmth, swelling or darkening can occur as the skin settles.

Contact the treating clinic if swelling is worsening, blistering develops, pain is severe, the treated area becomes increasingly hot or has discharge, or the skin colour change is spreading. Seek urgent medical help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or other signs of a serious allergic reaction.
