What should you know about a PET TAC scan?

The PET component maps how tissues take up a tracer, often FDG. The CT component shows anatomy, including the position and shape of organs, lymph nodes, and other findings. Putting these views together helps clinicians decide whether an area needs closer assessment and how findings relate to one another.

Tracer uptake can occur in cancer, infection, inflammation, or normal tissues. The scan therefore supports diagnosis and staging but does not by itself prove what a spot represents. In some situations, a biopsy or another imaging test is needed.

Before the appointment, follow the centre’s instructions about food, fluids, medicines, and blood sugar. Tell staff if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, unwell, or unable to lie still. You receive the tracer, rest while it distributes, and then lie on the scanner bed while images are taken. Keeping still helps reduce motion blur.

After the scan, follow instructions about drinking fluids and contact with others. Ask when the report will be sent to your clinician. The result is interpreted alongside your history, examination, blood tests, and previous images.

Tell the staff at once if you develop a rash, swelling, dizziness, wheezing, or trouble breathing. Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or rapidly worsening symptoms. If symptoms begin later, contact the imaging service for advice about the injection and your next step.

Ask whether PET TAC means PET-CT at your centre, what question the scan is answering, and whether a tissue sample may still be required. Ask how soon results will be discussed and which symptoms should be reported before then.
