What should you know about PET scan used to diagnose?

After FDG is administered, tissues that use more glucose may appear more prominent on the PET images. The CT images show the location and structure of those areas. This combination can help a team examine an unexplained finding, identify a suitable area for biopsy, or look for a pattern that guides further testing.

A bright area is a clue, not a diagnosis. Infection, inflammation, recent treatment, and normal activity can affect the appearance. Some cancers may show little FDG activity, so a reassuring scan does not answer every clinical question. The radiologist and treating team interpret the images in context.

Check the centre's instructions before attending. You may need to avoid food for a period, limit strenuous exercise, drink water, and discuss diabetes medicines or blood-sugar control. Tell the team about pregnancy or possible pregnancy, recent surgery or infection, and whether you can remain still. Plan for a quiet waiting period after the tracer injection.

Tell the staff at once if you develop wheezing, throat or facial swelling, marked dizziness, or sudden severe discomfort. Get urgent medical help after leaving for breathing problems, fainting, widespread rash, or rapidly increasing swelling. Contact the ordering team if you do not understand the next diagnostic step or if symptoms worsen while waiting for results.

Ask what question the PET-CT is addressing, which findings would lead to a biopsy or MRI, whether your medicines need adjustment, and who will explain the report.
