What does PET scan stand for?

The positron part refers to the type of tracer used during the scan. The tomography part means the scanner builds images in slices, which can be viewed as a three-dimensional picture. A PET-CT combines this activity map with CT images showing anatomy. Areas that use more of the tracer can appear more active, but activity can also occur with inflammation or healing, so an image is not a diagnosis by itself.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about food, drinks, medicines and activity. Tell the team if you have diabetes, may be pregnant, are breastfeeding, or have difficulty lying still. You receive the tracer, rest quietly while it distributes, and then lie on the scanner for image collection. Contact the imaging team promptly if you develop unusual symptoms after the appointment, or if you could not follow the preparation instructions. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or swelling of the face or throat. Ask the clinician who requested the scan when and how the report will be discussed.
