Can a PET scan examine the parathyroid?

The parathyroid glands are small structures beside the thyroid in the neck. Problems involving them are usually assessed with symptoms, blood tests, ultrasound, or other targeted imaging. A PET-CT combines information about tissue activity with an anatomical map. In selected situations, this may help locate an abnormal gland, clarify findings after earlier treatment, or assess an area that other tests have not explained. The tracer used depends on the clinical question; FDG is one radiotracer used in oncology imaging, but a PET study is not automatically an investigation for cancer. A bright area on a scan is not a diagnosis by itself. Inflammation, normal variation, and other active tissues can influence the appearance, so the report is considered alongside calcium, parathyroid hormone results, symptoms, and previous images.

Ask the imaging service which tracer will be used and whether you need to fast. Provide a list of medicines, explain any diabetes treatment, and tell the team about pregnancy or breastfeeding. Bring relevant blood-test results and prior neck or chest imaging if requested. Contact the imaging service if the injection site becomes increasingly painful, red, swollen, or warm. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fainting, or widespread hives. Separately, seek prompt medical advice for severe weakness, confusion, repeated vomiting, or symptoms your clinician has linked with an abnormal calcium level. Do not wait for a scan report if you feel acutely unwell.
