What should you know about a PET scan of the neck?

The scan can examine areas such as the throat, thyroid region, salivary glands, and cervical lymph nodes, while often covering connected regions of the chest or body. The PET component highlights tissue using more FDG, and CT provides location and structure. Activity can arise from cancer, infection, inflammation, healing, or normal organs. A bright area therefore needs interpretation alongside symptoms, examination, earlier images, and sometimes tissue sampling.

Follow the centre's instructions about fasting, medicines, blood glucose, and physical activity. Mention recent dental work, throat infection, vaccination, surgery, or neck treatment because healing and inflammation can influence findings. Remove necklaces and other loose metal if asked, and tell staff about implanted devices. After the FDG injection, rest quietly and keep your head and body still during image capture. The technologist can support your position if lying flat is uncomfortable.

Tell staff immediately about swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, severe discomfort, or a spreading rash after the injection. Seek urgent help for severe trouble breathing or collapse. Arrange timely clinical review for a new neck lump, worsening trouble swallowing, voice change, or unexplained weight loss; these symptoms need assessment independently of whether a scan has been ordered.
