What does a PET scan machine look like?

The circular housing contains detectors, while the table is padded and moves slowly into the opening. In a PET-CT system, the PET and CT sections sit together or closely aligned so the same body position can be imaged with both methods. The opening is not a sealed capsule. The room has monitoring equipment and an intercom, and the technologist can see and hear you. Your head or feet may enter first depending on the scan area and local protocol.

You may change into suitable clothing and remove items that could interfere with the CT images. After the FDG radiotracer is given, you rest quietly before lying on the table. During image capture, keep your body still and breathe as instructed. The table may move several times, and the scanner can make operating sounds. Tell staff beforehand if you feel anxious, have pain when lying flat, or need help transferring onto the table.

Tell the technologist straight away if you feel unwell during the appointment, especially if you have breathing trouble, faintness, severe discomfort, or a rapidly spreading rash after the injection. Once home, seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty or collapse. A scan appearance cannot explain symptoms by itself, so discuss the report with the requesting clinician.

Ask whether your scan uses PET-CT, which body area will enter the opening first, how long you should expect to remain still, and whether a support person or calming plan can be arranged.
