PET-CT machine images: how to understand them

PET images display where a radiotracer has collected, often using differences in brightness or colour. CT images show organs, bones, and other structures in slices. Software aligns the sets so an area of uptake can be matched with its anatomical position. The display is a visual aid, not a diagnosis. Normal organs, movement, medication effects, infection, and inflammation can all influence the appearance. A radiologist or nuclear medicine specialist reviews the full study and report.

You may receive FDG or another tracer through a vein and rest quietly before imaging. The table moves through the ring-shaped scanner while you remain still; staff may give breathing instructions. Preparation can include fasting, avoiding strenuous exercise, and discussing diabetes or medicines. Tell the team if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, claustrophobic, or unable to lie flat. Ask how and when your images and report will be shared rather than trying to diagnose yourself from a screen view.

Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, new one-sided weakness, or sudden confusion. Contact the imaging team about an expanding rash, facial swelling, or worsening breathing after an injection. A striking image alone is not an emergency measure; symptoms and the clinical situation determine how quickly help is needed.

Ask which tracer was used, whether the images are being compared with an earlier scan, and what area prompted the examination. Ask when the written report will be explained and whether a biopsy, repeat imaging, or another test is needed before treatment decisions.
