Pet allergy test: what to expect

Testing is interpreted alongside your history. A clinician may ask which animals trigger symptoms, how quickly symptoms begin, whether they occur indoors or outdoors, and whether dust or other allergens could be involved. A skin prick test or blood test may be discussed.

A positive result shows sensitisation to an allergen; it does not by itself prove that every symptom is caused by that exposure. A negative result also needs context. The result can guide avoidance advice and treatment choices, but it cannot predict the exact severity of a future reaction.

Bring a list of symptoms, medicines, medical conditions, and suspected animal exposures. Some medicines can affect skin testing, so ask the testing service whether any should be paused; do not stop prescribed treatment without instructions.

After testing, discuss what the result means for your home, workplace, and contact with animals. A clinician can also review allergy medication for nose or eye symptoms and consider whether another diagnosis needs attention.

Seek medical advice if symptoms are persistent, unexplained, or affecting sleep or breathing. Get emergency help for sudden breathing difficulty, swelling of the mouth or throat, faintness, or a rapidly spreading reaction after exposure.

Ask which test is appropriate, whether medicines could affect it, how the result changes your plan, and whether symptoms could reflect allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma, or another trigger.
