What should you know about pertussis bronchitis?

Bronchitis describes inflammation of the breathing tubes, while pertussis is an infection that can produce a distinctive, persistent cough. Early pertussis may look like a routine respiratory illness. Later, coughing bouts can be intense, closely spaced, and followed by a gasp, vomiting, or exhaustion. A whoop may be absent. Fever can be mild or absent, so its absence does not settle the diagnosis. A clinician may ask about exposure, cough duration, breathing, and underlying lung problems before deciding whether testing or treatment is appropriate.

Arrange medical advice when a cough is coming in bouts, worsening after a cold-like start, or affecting sleep and meals. Describe mucus, fever, vomiting, chest soreness, and any contact with someone who had pertussis. Rest, drink regularly, and avoid smoke, dust, and strong fragrances. Use careful cough etiquette and handwashing, and ask how long to limit close contact with babies or vulnerable people. If an antibiotic is prescribed, follow the directions and do not use someone else’s medicine. Vaccination review can support future prevention but does not replace assessment of a current illness.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, collapse, confusion, or serious chest pain. Obtain prompt assessment for repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration, fainting during a cough, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
