What should you know about personal IPL device?

Intense pulsed light, or IPL, sends a flash containing several wavelengths into the skin. Dark pigment in a hair can absorb some of that light, creating heat around the follicle. Home devices are designed for lower energy than many clinic systems, and results vary with hair colour, skin tone, hair thickness, and the treatment schedule. IPL is not the same as a laser, and a home device is not suitable for every body site or skin mark.

Read the manual from start to finish and use its skin-tone sensor or test patch when provided. Shave rather than wax or tweeze if the instructions require the follicle to remain present. Keep the window flat against clean, dry skin, protect the eyes as directed, and never flash over tattoos, dark moles, wounds, active rashes, or recently tanned skin. Use the recommended interval; extra flashes can increase irritation without improving the outcome.

Stop if you feel a sharp burning sensation or notice blistering, marked swelling, crusting, or persistent light or dark patches. Seek care for eye pain or visual symptoms after a flash near the face. A dermatologist can review a reaction and advise whether a clinic IPL photofacial or another treatment is appropriate for a separate skin concern.
