Persistent headache over the left eye: what to know

Pain in this area may come from migraine, sinus or eye problems, muscle tension, or irritation of nearby nerves. The location alone cannot identify the cause. Note whether the pain throbs, feels like pressure, worsens with movement, or comes with nausea, light sensitivity, a blocked nose, tearing, or a red eye.

A brain tumour can present with headache, but a headache over one eye does not by itself show that a tumour is present. Brain metastases and glioblastoma may cause headache alongside other changes such as seizures, weakness, confusion, speech difficulty, or altered vision.

Arrange a clinician review if the headache persists, keeps returning, or differs from your usual pattern. Bring a record of when it began, how long each episode lasts, triggers, sleep, medicines, blood pressure readings if available, and associated symptoms. Rest in a quiet, dim room, drink fluids, and follow the label or a clinician’s advice for any pain medicine. Avoid repeatedly taking pain medicine without guidance, because frequent use can maintain headaches.

Seek emergency help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, fainting, a seizure, confusion, repeated vomiting, loss of vision, a painful red eye, fever with a stiff neck, or a headache after a head injury. Prompt assessment is also needed if the pain steadily worsens or wakes you repeatedly.

Ask what causes fit the pain pattern, whether your eyes and nerves need examination, which treatments are suitable with your medicines, and what change should prompt urgent review. If you have a current or previous cancer diagnosis, ask whether that history changes the evaluation.
