Persistent headache and tiredness: what to know

Short answer

Persistent headache and tiredness can arise from poor sleep, infection, stress, medicines, or another health problem, so a continuing or changing pattern should be assessed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Sleep, timing, triggers, medicines, and accompanying symptoms
Remember
A symptom pair cannot diagnose a brain tumour

How to interpret the pattern

Tiredness may follow disrupted sleep, dehydration, a viral illness, anaemia, low mood, hormonal changes, or treatment side effects. Head pain can be linked with migraine, eye strain, jaw tension, neck strain, or frequent use of pain medicine. A brain tumour or brain metastases can present with neurological symptoms, but persistent headache and tiredness alone do not establish either diagnosis. Glioblastoma is one specific brain tumour; it cannot be identified from a symptom pair without examination and appropriate testing.

Look for pattern rather than a single difficult day. Record when the pain starts, whether it is worse in the morning, how sleep affects it, and whether tiredness limits ordinary tasks. Also note fever, weight change, new medicines, snoring, vision symptoms, balance problems, or changes in memory and behaviour.

Practical next steps

Keep regular sleep and meal times, drink enough fluid, take breaks from screens, and avoid taking pain medicine more often than directed. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. Book an appointment if the symptoms continue or are worsening. Bring a list of medicines and a short symptom diary; this helps a clinician decide whether examination, blood tests, or other assessment is appropriate.

Warning signs

Seek urgent care for a sudden severe headache, weakness, numbness, speech difficulty, confusion, fainting, seizure, repeated vomiting, new vision loss, or difficulty walking. Prompt review is also needed for a headache after a significant injury, or tiredness with chest pain, severe breathlessness, or inability to stay awake.

Useful questions

Ask whether your sleep, medicines, blood pressure, vision, or another condition could explain the pattern. Ask what symptoms would change the urgency and whether tests are needed to investigate the tiredness as well as the headache.

Questions people ask

Can tiredness make a headache feel worse?

Yes. Poor sleep, dehydration, illness, and stress can lower the threshold for head pain or make it harder to recover.

Should ongoing tiredness and headache be assessed?

Yes, especially when the pattern is new, progressive, recurrent, or affecting daily activities.
