Persistent cough and stuffy nose

A blocked nose can make mucus drain into the throat and provoke coughing. Allergic rhinitis often brings sneezing, nasal itching or watery eyes, while a viral illness may add sore throat, fever or body aches. Acid reflux can cause cough when stomach contents irritate the throat. Asthma may present mainly as cough, especially at night or with exercise, and can include wheeze or chest tightness. A cough lasting beyond the expected recovery period is described as chronic cough and deserves a structured assessment.

Arrange a GP appointment if symptoms are persistent, recurrent or affecting sleep. Write down the timing, nasal discharge, temperature, exposures, medicines and whether symptoms change after meals or when lying down. Avoid smoke and strong fragrances, drink enough fluid and ask a pharmacist about suitable nasal treatment. Use decongestant sprays only as directed because prolonged use can worsen blockage.

Seek urgent help for marked breathing difficulty, chest pain, blue lips, confusion, fainting or coughing blood. Get prompt advice for swelling around the eyes, severe facial pain, a high fever that persists, or a cough that rapidly worsens.
