Perioral dermatitis under the eye: what to know

Perioral dermatitis is often associated with small bumps, redness, scaling, burning, or dryness around the mouth, nose, and sometimes the eyes. Skin under the eye is thin and easily irritated by cosmetics, cleansers, creams, sunscreen, sweat, and rubbing.

Under-eye bumps can also reflect eczema, contact dermatitis, allergy, infection, or another eyelid condition. Do not put acne medicines, essential oils, or steroid creams close to the eye unless a clinician specifically directs you. A diagnosis depends on the appearance, distribution, timing, and any eye symptoms.

Pause eye makeup and fragranced products around the affected skin. Clean gently with lukewarm water, keep products out of the eye, and avoid rubbing or squeezing bumps. Bring the actual products and medicine list to an appointment, especially if a facial steroid or new eye cream was used.

Arrange medical review for a persistent or spreading rash near the eye. Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, blurred or changed vision, light sensitivity, painful eye movement, marked eyelid swelling, pus, fever, or difficulty opening the eye.

Ask whether the eyelid itself is involved, which products are safe near the eye, whether treatment should be topical or oral, and which changes mean you should seek same-day care.
