Getting help for perioral dermatitis

The rash commonly consists of small bumps, redness, flaking, tightness or burning around the mouth, with a narrow clear margin near the lips. It can extend around the nose or eyes and may be mistaken for acne or another form of sensitive skin. A clinician uses the distribution, symptoms, product history and medication history to make the diagnosis.

Steroid creams, heavy moisturisers, cosmetics, cleansers and toothpaste residue may all matter for an individual. There is no single home remedy that suits every rash.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry and pause new or fragranced products. Avoid picking, harsh exfoliation and applying steroid creams without medical direction. Keep a simple record of products and flare timing so an appointment can focus on likely irritants.

If the rash needs treatment, a clinician may choose topical antibiotic therapy or oral antibiotics. Improvement can take time, and the plan may need adjustment if the diagnosis is different or the skin becomes more irritated.

Seek a dermatology assessment when the eruption is persistent, recurrent, spreading or affecting daily comfort. Get prompt attention for eye pain, altered vision, facial swelling, fever, pus or rapidly increasing pain and redness.
