Perioral Dermatitis and Toothpaste

Toothpaste residue can contact the skin during brushing, especially if it is left at the corners of the mouth. Flavouring ingredients, foaming agents, or other additives may bother sensitive skin in some people. A rash with tiny bumps, scale, burning, or sparing right next to the lips can also be perioral dermatitis. Pimples, lip eczema, and contact dermatitis can look similar, so the timing of toothpaste changes is only one clue.

Rinse the skin around your mouth after brushing and pat it dry rather than rubbing. Avoid applying toothpaste directly to the rash, scrubbing it, or layering fragranced balms over it. If a clinician agrees, simplify to a mild, non-flavoured oral-care product while keeping the rest of your facial routine stable; changing several products at once makes triggers harder to identify. Use a plain moisturiser for tightness. Do not use steroid cream or acne products on the area without advice. Persistent disease may need topical antibiotic therapy or an oral antibiotic.

Seek an assessment if the rash remains after careful rinsing and a simpler routine, spreads toward the nose or eyes, or keeps returning. Get prompt help for eye pain, vision change, facial swelling, pus, fever, or severe tenderness. Swelling of the lips or difficulty breathing after brushing needs urgent emergency care.
