Period sex and endometriosis: what to know

Endometriosis is tissue similar to the womb lining growing outside the womb. It can contribute to inflammation, scarring, and tenderness in the pelvis. Deeper penetration may aggravate areas behind the womb or near the bowel, while period-related cramping can add to the discomfort. Pain during sex is a presentation of endometriosis, but it can also have other causes.

Notice whether pain is at the entrance or deep inside, whether it occurs only during bleeding, and whether you also have [Painful Periods](/symptoms/painful-periods/), [Pelvic Pain](/symptoms/pelvic-pain/), or difficulty conceiving.

Stop if pain begins and talk openly with your partner. Consider positions that control depth, slower movement, more warm-up, and a lubricant if dryness contributes. Non-penetrative intimacy is a valid alternative during painful days.

Arrange a gynaecology review if pain is recurrent or affects intimacy.
