Short answer

A TENS machine may ease period cramps by delivering mild electrical pulses, but it should complement medical advice when pain is severe.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How TENS fits in

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Adhesive pads placed on intact skin send gentle pulses that may alter how pain signals are felt and may encourage local muscle relaxation. It can help symptoms without explaining why they occur. Persistent or disabling cramps can be associated with Endometriosis, Adenomyosis, Uterine Fibroids, Ovarian Endometrioma, or Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, so improvement with a device should not end an overdue assessment.

Using it carefully

Read the device instructions and start with a comfortable setting; the sensation should not be painful or cause skin irritation. Place pads on the lower abdomen or back as directed, keep them away from broken skin, and remove them before sleeping, bathing, or swimming. Do not place pads across the front of the neck, head, or chest. Ask a clinician before use if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, reduced skin sensation, or are pregnant. Check the skin after use and stop if there is a burn, rash, or worsening pain.

When a device is not enough

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, fainting, fever, heavy bleeding, repeated vomiting, or pain with a possible pregnancy. Arrange a medical review when cramps keep disrupting daily life, steadily worsen, begin after years of mild cycles, or occur with unusual discharge or pain during sex. A TENS machine can support comfort, but it should not delay evaluation of red-flag symptoms.

Questions for your doctor

Ask where pads should sit for your symptoms, how long to try the device, and which features mean you should stop. Discuss other options, including the Combined Pill or Hormonal Coil, if cramps recur each cycle.

Questions people ask

Can TENS cure the cause of period cramps?

No. It may help the pain sensation but does not identify or remove an underlying pelvic condition.

Can I sleep with TENS pads on?

Follow the device guidance, and remove the pads before sleeping unless a qualified clinician specifically advises otherwise.
