Period cramps and sex

Period cramps are caused by womb contractions and may be felt in the lower abdomen, back, or thighs. Penetration can add pressure to a tender pelvis. Deep pain, pain that continues after sex, or pain outside your period can point to conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, ovarian endometrioma, fibroids, or pelvic inflammatory disease. Painful sex does not identify one diagnosis on its own.

Notice whether pain is at the entrance or deeper inside, whether it follows a cycle, and whether bleeding, unusual discharge, fever, or pain with urination occurs. These details help a clinician choose the right examination.

Choose intimacy that does not cause pain, communicate about depth and position, and use a suitable lubricant if dryness contributes. Heat over the lower abdomen may ease cramping. Use an over-the-counter pain medicine only if it is safe for you and follow its label. A clinician can discuss options such as the combined pill or hormonal coil when period pain is frequent.

Arrange an appointment if cramps disrupt sex, work, sleep, or daily activities, or if the pattern is becoming worse. Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, fainting, fever, vomiting, heavy bleeding, or a possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding.
