Perimenopause symptoms: itchy skin

How the structures involved in Perimenopause differ from normal

Short answer

Itchy skin can occur during perimenopause as changing hormones affect skin moisture and sensitivity, but other causes are possible.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the symptom may mean

Fluctuating oestrogen can leave skin drier or more reactive, so itching may be felt on the arms, legs, back or elsewhere without a visible rash. Heat, sweating, fragranced products, eczema, allergies, medicines and thyroid or liver problems can also cause itch. A symptom diary can show whether itching follows hot flushes, night sweats, a new product or a change in your cycle. Itchy skin is not a reliable way to confirm perimenopause on its own.

Ways to ease irritation

Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and apply a thick moisturiser soon after bathing. Keep showers lukewarm, choose soft breathable clothing, and avoid scratching by keeping nails short or using a cool compress. If a product seems to trigger the itch, stop it temporarily and introduce replacements one at a time. Discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician, especially if sleep is affected; treatment depends on the cause and your medical history.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice for itching that is severe, widespread, recurrent, or accompanied by a rash, swelling, fever, yellowing of the skin, dark urine, unexplained weight change or marked tiredness. Seek urgent help for facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your skin looks dry, inflamed or infected; whether another condition or medicine could be responsible; and which moisturiser or treatment is suitable for you. Mention changes such as [irregular periods](/symptoms/irregular-periods/) or [night sweats](/symptoms/night-sweats/).
