Penile lichen sclerosus and cancer: what to know

Lichen sclerosus can affect genital skin, including the foreskin and glans. It may cause itching, soreness, white or pale patches, cracks, tightening, or difficulty retracting the foreskin. Scarring can alter urination or sexual comfort. These changes are not the same as cancer, but a persistent ulcer, lump, bleeding area, thickening, or non-healing sore should be examined.

Genital skin symptoms can overlap with irritation, infection, eczema, and other conditions. A clinician may inspect the skin, review its progression, and sometimes arrange a biopsy when the appearance is persistent or unusual.

Use prescribed topical treatment exactly as directed and avoid fragranced soaps, wipes, and harsh rubbing. Keep the area gently clean and dry, use bland emollient protection if advised, and do not force a tight foreskin. Topical corticosteroids are commonly used to calm inflammation, while follow-up checks help assess response and skin changes. Pain during sex or urinary difficulty should be discussed rather than endured.

Arrange prompt review for a new ulcer, bleeding, a firm lump, a changing patch, or a sore that does not heal. Seek urgent care if the foreskin becomes trapped behind the glans, urination is severely impaired, or swelling and pain develop suddenly.
