How long a pelvic MRI takes

The imaging portion commonly involves several sequences, and each sequence requires you to stay still while the scanner makes repeated sounds. The appointment may take longer if the radiologist needs additional views, if contrast is given, or if staff need extra time to position you comfortably.

The scan is only one part of the visit. Check-in, changing, completing the MRI safety questionnaire, placing a cannula when needed, and reviewing aftercare can all add time. Ask the centre for its expected appointment window.

Arrive with enough time for screening and bring details of implants, previous operations, medicines, and relevant allergies. Wear simple clothing without metal and follow instructions about eating, drinking, or bladder preparation. Arrange practical flexibility afterward if you may feel tired or need to discuss the report.

Tell the technologist if pain or anxiety makes it difficult to lie still. A clear explanation and planned breaks may help the imaging proceed smoothly.

An MRI appointment should not replace urgent assessment. Seek prompt care for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, fever with worsening illness, or inability to pass urine. Contact the imaging centre if you cannot complete the scan or develop a concerning reaction after contrast.

Ask how long the scan and full visit are expected to take, whether contrast or special preparation is involved, and whether you can return to normal activities afterward.
