What should you know about pedicle screw touching nerve?

Pedicle screws anchor spinal rods during procedures such as scoliosis correction or spinal fusion. Because they sit near nerve pathways, their position is checked against the patient’s symptoms and postoperative images. A screw that appears close to a nerve does not prove that it is the cause of every symptom; swelling, nerve stretch, the original spine problem and other factors may contribute.

Symptoms can follow a path into the back, buttock, arm or leg, depending on the nerve involved. Compare the current symptoms with the preoperative baseline and note when they began, what worsens them, and whether strength or walking has changed.

Contact the operating spine team promptly if new or worsening nerve symptoms appear after surgery. Provide the operation date, symptom location and any changes in strength or bladder or bowel function. The team may examine sensation and movement and review imaging before deciding whether observation, medication, further imaging or a procedure is appropriate.

Seek emergency care for rapidly increasing weakness, inability to stand or walk, new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, severe uncontrolled pain, or a wound problem with fever and worsening illness. Ask which nerve may be involved, whether the imaging shows contact or compression, how your examination compares with the scan, and what change would require urgent treatment. Ask about expected recovery, activity limits, pain control and whether another specialist review is useful.
