What a PC-based ECG machine does

An electrocardiogram measures the timing and pattern of electrical activity as the heart beats. A clinician places adhesive electrodes on the chest and limbs, connects them to a recording device and captures a trace while you remain still. PC-based systems transfer that trace to software, where it can be stored, printed or reviewed on a larger screen. The recording can show rhythm patterns and some signs of strain or reduced blood flow, but it is one part of an assessment and does not explain every cause of chest symptoms or palpitations.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest and lower limbs, and tell the clinician about medicines, implanted devices and current symptoms. Avoid applying oily moisturiser where electrodes will be placed. During the test, lie or sit comfortably, breathe normally and keep still; movement or a loose electrode can create artefact. The recording itself is brief, and removing electrodes may mildly irritate sensitive skin. Ask how and when the result will be explained.

Do not wait for an ECG appointment if you have severe or persistent chest pressure, fainting, marked breathlessness, blue lips, or sudden weakness affecting one side of the body. Call emergency services for these symptoms. An ECG can support urgent assessment, but a normal trace at one moment does not rule out every serious heart problem.

Ask why the ECG is recommended, whether you need a resting or longer recording, what an unclear trace means, when results will be available, and whether further tests are needed for your symptoms.
