Paracardiac pneumonia: what it means

Paracardiac means beside the heart. A paracardiac pneumonia finding usually describes the location of an area of lung inflammation seen on a chest image; it does not by itself identify the germ or show how severe the illness is. Pneumonia can cause [Cough](/symptoms/cough/), [Fever](/symptoms/fever/), chills, chest discomfort, tiredness or [Coughing Up Phlegm](/symptoms/coughing-up-phlegm/).

A clinician combines the scan or X-ray appearance with breathing rate, oxygen level, examination findings and the person's general health. Viral infections such as [Influenza](/conditions/influenza/) or [COVID-19](/conditions/covid-19/) can be associated with pneumonia, while bacterial causes are also possible. The image location is not a diagnosis of the cause.

Follow the treatment plan, take prescribed medicine exactly as directed, rest, drink fluids when able, and avoid smoking or second-hand smoke. Ask how to manage fever and pain and whether a follow-up examination or repeat imaging is needed. Note changes in breathing, alertness, fluid intake and phlegm, and share them with the clinician.

Do not stop prescribed treatment simply because the cough improves. Arrange review if symptoms are not settling, return after improvement, or make eating, drinking or normal activity difficult. Ask for clear instructions about returning to work, school or childcare.

Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, or rapidly worsening weakness. A person who is hard to wake or has very little urine needs urgent assessment. Pneumonia can occasionally lead to [Sepsis](/conditions/sepsis/), particularly when the person deteriorates quickly or seems severely unwell.

Ask which lung area is affected, what cause is suspected, whether antibiotics or other treatment is appropriate, how oxygen and breathing will be monitored, when improvement should be reviewed, and which warning signs should send you to emergency care.
