What should you know about para influenza virus?

Parainfluenza viruses spread through respiratory droplets and contaminated hands or surfaces. They may cause a cold-like illness with cough, chills, headache, fatigue, fever and a general feeling of being unwell. The infection can sometimes involve the lower airways and lead to pneumonia, particularly in infants, older adults or people with underlying lung or immune problems. A virus test can support the diagnosis, but the result must be considered alongside symptoms and examination findings.

Rest, drink enough to avoid dehydration and keep the air around you fresh. Wash hands, cover coughs and avoid close contact with people who are vulnerable while you are ill. Use only recommended fever or pain remedies, checking with a pharmacist for children, pregnancy or medicine interactions. Because antibiotics do not treat viruses, a clinician should decide whether they have a role for a separate bacterial problem.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, unusual difficulty waking, inability to drink or signs of significant dehydration. Seek clinical advice when fever or cough is worsening, chest pain appears, or symptoms return strongly after improving. Arrange earlier assessment for a vulnerable infant, older person or anyone with serious lung or immune disease.
