What should you know about para influenza symptoms?

Short answer
Parainfluenza symptoms can include cough, fever, chills, headache, fatigue and a general feeling of being unwell.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Airway symptoms
- Cough, congestion and sore throat may occur
- Whole-body symptoms
- Fever, chills, headache and fatigue are possible
Recognising the pattern
Parainfluenza often begins with upper-airway symptoms such as a blocked or runny nose, sore throat and cough. Fever or chills may occur, while fatigue and headache can make normal activities harder. Symptoms vary between people and can resemble influenza or other respiratory infections, so the symptom pattern cannot identify the virus on its own. In some cases, especially in vulnerable people, coughing and breathing symptoms become more severe as the lower airways are affected.
Practical care
Take time to rest, drink regularly and choose soft or warm fluids if your throat is sore. Follow label directions for any fever or pain medicine and check with a pharmacist if you take other medicines or are caring for a child. Reduce transmission by washing hands, covering coughs and improving airflow indoors. A clinician can decide whether examination or a swab is useful when symptoms are severe, prolonged or occurring in someone at higher risk.
Warning signs
Seek urgent care if breathing is difficult, lips look blue or grey, the person is hard to wake, fluids cannot be kept down or urination becomes much less frequent. Arrange medical advice for worsening chest symptoms, chest pain, a persistent fever or improvement followed by a clear deterioration. Young infants and people with chronic lung or immune conditions should be assessed sooner when symptoms are concerning.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which symptoms fit a routine viral illness, how to protect household members and whether a test would alter care. Ask what breathing rate, fever pattern or fluid changes should prompt immediate reassessment.
