What does pale skin look like?
Pale skin looks lighter or less richly coloured than your usual skin tone, especially on the face, lips, gums, palms, or inside the eyelids. On darker skin, the change may be easier to notice in the lips, gums, palms, nail beds, or the lining of the lower eyelid than across the face. Compare the area with your usual colour in natural light, because cold, anxiety, bright lighting, or recent illness can temporarily change how skin looks.
What a pale appearance may mean
Paleness can happen when less blood reaches the skin, when the blood carries less oxygen, or when the blood has fewer red blood cells. Anaemia can present with pale skin and may also cause tiredness, breathlessness with activity, dizziness, headaches, or a fast heartbeat. Iron deficiency anaemia is one possible cause; vitamin B12 deficiency and inherited blood conditions such as thalassaemia or sickle cell disease can also affect blood cells. A pale appearance alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may ask about bleeding, diet, medicines, periods, bowel symptoms, and family history, then decide whether blood tests are appropriate.
What to do if your skin looks pale
Note when the change began, whether it is constant, and where it is easiest to see. Check your lips, gums, palms, and lower eyelids in daylight, and ask someone you trust whether they notice a change from your normal colour. Arrange a routine medical appointment if paleness persists, keeps returning, or occurs with tiredness, dizziness, breathlessness, heavy menstrual bleeding, weight change, numbness, or changes in bowel habits. Do not start iron tablets solely because your skin looks pale; treatment depends on the cause and too much iron can be harmful.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent medical help if sudden paleness comes with fainting, severe weakness, confusion, chest pain, severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, heavy bleeding, or cold clammy skin. These combinations can signal a serious problem with circulation, oxygen delivery, or blood loss. If the change follows an injury or you are vomiting blood, passing black stools, or bleeding heavily, seek emergency care rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
Questions for your doctor
You could ask: Which signs make anaemia or another blood condition more likely? Do I need a blood count or tests for iron and vitamin B12? Could medicines, diet, menstrual bleeding, or another source of blood loss explain the change? Which symptoms should make me seek help sooner?

Questions people ask
Can pale skin be normal?
A brief change after cold exposure, fright, or illness can occur. Persistent or recurring paleness should be assessed, particularly with other symptoms.
Does pale skin always mean anaemia?
No. Paleness has several possible causes, and appearance alone cannot diagnose anaemia. A clinician may use an examination and blood tests to investigate it.
Where can pale skin be hardest to notice?
Across the face, especially on darker skin tones. The lips, gums, palms, nail beds, and lower eyelids may show a colour change more clearly.
